that THE HINDU published on 2 February 2007.

Reportedly, Dr. Valiathan said this while inaugurating the three-day seminar on
Cardiovascular Prosthetic Devices. The Indo-US Science & Technology Forum, New
Delhi, and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences jointly organized this
workshop in Thiruvananthapuram on 1st February 2007.

Besides reinforcing cardiovascular research, stem cell therapy can bring in radical
transformation in the treatment of various diseases in humans, according to medical
researchers. There are several stem cell therapies presently in practice,
specifically the bone marrow transplants.

Indian Council for Medical Research in its estimates revealed that about three to
six of every 1,000 children in India are susceptible to rheumatic heart diseases and
need valve replacement. Although nearly 50 million Indians have coronary artery
diseases, only 25,000-40,000 surgical & interventional procedures take place per
annum.

In spite of evidently huge requirement, there’s an incessant import of almost
80% of all biomedical devices in this country. Also, the R&D in stem cell is also
limited to select centers here.

However, the country is drafting plans for a countrywide stem cell program in order
to enhance stem cell research’s clinical applications, construct bridges
between medical doctors and scientists and prioritize research-funding areas.

The purpose of designing this Indo-US workshop was to highlight the areas of
research encompassing the experimental, animal as well as human trials for
cardiovascular implants, particularly stents & prosthetic heart valves.
